What do people ask about a sore joint?
You may wake with one joint aching. It loosens, then hurts again later. You want to know why. You also want choices that make sense.
These answers can't diagnose your joint. The cause needs an exam. They can help you prepare for that visit. You'll know which details to bring and what to ask.
Does stem cell therapy work for joint soreness?
The results aren't settled. A large knee study found no tested product clearly beat steroid medicine for pain. Smaller studies have found some gains. They can't tell what every person will feel. Compare the patients' joint, wear and product with yours. If those facts differ, the claim may not fit you.
What does stem cell therapy mean at a joint clinic?
The term can cover several office procedures. Some use marrow drawn from your pelvis. Others use prepared body fat or tissue from another person. They aren't one medicine. The material and preparation steps differ. Ask the clinic to name what would go near your joint.
What is bone marrow aspirate concentrate?
It is marrow drawn from your pelvis and spun by a machine. Spinning keeps more of the cell-filled part in less liquid. The result still contains several kinds of cells and other material. It isn't one pure cell type. Ask the clinic to explain its contents in words you understand.
How much does stem cell therapy cost in Arizona?
Prices aren't fixed across products or joints. People often pay cash for these procedures. Ask for every charge in writing. The total needs to cover the exam, material, procedure and later visits. Don't treat an advertised price as your Glendale quote. Ask whether repeat care would cost more.
What can I try before a joint procedure?
Move only until you feel sharp pain. Stop sooner if swelling grows afterward. Strength work may help nearby muscles share load. Heat can ease stiffness. Cold may calm swelling. A brace or cane can steady you. Kidney trouble, stomach bleeding or blood-thinning medicine can make some pain pills unsafe.
When does joint soreness need quick care?
A hot, very swollen joint with fever needs urgent care. Sudden trouble bearing weight also needs care. Back pain with new weakness or spreading numbness is an emergency. So is lost bladder or bowel control. Those signs can't wait for an ordinary appointment.
What will happen at a joint visit?
You'll explain where the ache starts and which movement triggers it. The person examining you may check motion, strength and swelling. Bring records from earlier care. Ask about home care, medicine, office procedures and surgery. Leave when you understand the next step and its limits.
Which questions matter before I pay?
Ask for the product name, its source and full cost. Ask whether the study used the same joint and material. You'll also want to know about healing and risks. Find out who helps if trouble starts later. Don't pay until you can repeat each answer plainly.

In a 480-patient, four-arm, multicenter randomized phase 2/3 trial, none of three orthobiologic cell injections - autologous bone marrow aspirate concentrate, autologous adipose stromal vascular fraction, or allogeneic umbilical cord tissue-derived mesenchymal stromal cells - was superior to any other, or to a corticosteroid injection control, on pain at 12 months.

FDA states in its consumer alert that the only FDA-approved stem cell products in the United States are blood-forming stem cells derived from umbilical cord blood, approved for disorders of the blood-forming system, and that NONE of these products - stem cells, stromal vascular fraction, umbilical cord blood, Wharton's jelly or amniotic fluid - has been approved for the treatment of any orthopedic condition, including osteoarthritis, tendonitis, disc disease, tennis elbow, back pain, hip pain, knee pain, neck pain or shoulder pain.

On 18 December 2024 FDA approved RYONCIL (remestemcel-L-rknd), the first mesenchymal stromal cell therapy ever approved in the United States - for steroid-refractory acute graft-versus-host disease in pediatric patients 2 months and older, given as eight intravenous infusions. It is not an orthopedic product and does not make any joint injection approved.

On 27 September 2024 the Ninth Circuit held in United States v. California Stem Cell Treatment Center that stromal vascular fraction produced by enzymatically digesting a patient's own fat IS a drug under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, and that the same surgical procedure exception does not apply because the removed fat and the implanted SVF are not the same thing. The district court's ruling for the clinics was reversed.

A 2025 meta-analysis of 73 double-blind placebo-controlled injection trials in 5,895 knee osteoarthritis patients found placebo responder rates above 50 percent at 1, 3 and 6 months, declining by 12 months - which is why any uncontrolled 'our patients improved' claim from a clinic is uninterpretable.

21 CFR 1271.10(a) sets the four criteria a human cell or tissue product must meet to be regulated SOLELY under section 361 of the Public Health Service Act: it must be minimally manipulated; intended for homologous use only, as reflected by labeling and advertising; not combined with another article beyond water, crystalloids or a preserving agent; and either have no systemic effect and not depend on the metabolic activity of living cells, or else be for autologous use, use in a close blood relative, or reproductive use.

The 2018 AAOS/NIH consensus work group recommended that minimally manipulated mixed cell preparations be called CELL THERAPY rather than stem cell therapy, and that their untested and uncharacterised nature be clearly communicated to patients and the public, because stem cells have properties these preparations do not meet.

What should I bring to a joint visit?
Bring your records and a short note about soreness. Include the motions that hurt and what helps. Write down any swelling or loss of motion.
Ask which choices fit your joint today. You can also ask about cost, risk and recovery. Don't leave until the next step is clear.
